Britânia Hotel

Situated in the tranquil street Rodrigues Sampaio, parallel to Avenida da Liberdade, the Hotel Britania building stands out for the vanguard features of its designer: Cassiano Branco, one of the great names of contemporary Portuguese architecture.

Regarded as the most modern and one of the most luxurious hotels in Lisbon, the beauty of the interiors – where the deco language lives alongside nationalist symbols – and the modernity of the equipment were all the rage at the time.

Hotel Britania has a past rife in stories: opened in wartime, foreign diplomats, politicians and spies crossed paths here with high financiers, artists and intellectuals. The setting for many sleepless nights, scandals and conspiracies, the parties and elegant suppers served in the early morning on the hotel terraces became famous in the tranquil@pacata Lisbon of the 1940’s. These memories were preserved.

The only hotel of the time to remain intact until today, the restoration of the building and of all the original furniture allowed its classification as a property of historic interest for the city of Lisbon.
